I'd stick to the foreign stuff. My brother used to have a FIAT 124 Sport (hardtop) - this car was factory stock with a 1600cc engine (2 valves per cylinder) and carbs. It could do redline in 5th gear at130 mph (I was a passenger at the time.) My Focus could barely do that when it was new, and it has a 2 litre engine and 4 valves per cylinder. Makes you wonder what went wrong...

Some American cars can do pretty good speeds in a straight line (because of that big hunk of cast iron in the front), but can't handle the corners (because of that big hunk of cast iron in the front).

Remember, Corvettes currently race against Ferraris, with mixed results (win some, lose some), but Ferrari does it with almost half the engine size. And old-time muscle cars may accelerate well at first, but their top speed is severely limited by poor aerodynamics (even when modified.)

In any case, the fastest production cars (modified or not) at the moment are all European. Kind of says it all, don't you think?
References :
Acceleration = American muscle cars . they r only good for drag racing .
Speed + handling + style + high tech + everything u could imagine = look no further than europeans especially the porsches . the porsche 911 is the most succesfull sport car in history .
References :
American Muscle is best in a straight line but if you want to road race the Foriegn car will have the advantage as the American cars will be nose heavy and not want to turn as sharply as the foriegn cars thus the american has to let off more gas in a turn.
References :
On paper, the Bugatti Veyron, Ferrari Enzo and Lamborghini Murcielago will all do better than 200 mph. However, I've never personally driven on a road in North America that I'd feel particilarly safe attempting this on.

On the other hand, any muscle car with a big block V8 while it won't do 200 mph will roll your eyeballs back in your head when you stand on the gas when the light turns green.

My personal fave is the '71 Dodge Charger with the 440 six pack painted just about any color BUT that redneck shitkicker Dukes of Hazzard style.
References :
Mostly American Muscle Cars. Modified foreign trash can be faster if they are hopped up, but then they wear out super quickly, and American Muscle Cars can be Souped up to surpass foreign trash and last indefinitely. There are some foreign exotics that can beat American Muscle in road races. EX. Ferrari, Lamborghini. But mostly the foreign stuff is really junk as it is too expensive to repair and maintain for the long term. American cars are extra cheap in comparison to run and maintain for an extra long term. So foreign initial quality is just trash in the long haul.
References :
Traditionally the fastest cars are Italian. Ferrari, Lamborghini are 2 of them along with Alpha Romeo.
The German Porshe is right up there too.
The Moroccan Laraki is creating a nice little spot for itsself too recently.
